BERNAL, Clemencia; PACHECO, Adriana; NUNEZ, Jhoanna  e  RINCON, Fanny. Characterization of angina symptoms in adult men with positive cardiac catheterization for coronary heart disease. Rev. Colomb. Cardiol. [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.3, pp.138-146. ISSN 0120-5633.

Introduction: coronary heart disease caused 29,394 deaths in Colombia in 2011, being the main leading cause of death, according to the National Statistics Department. It is important to decrease the time between onset of symptoms and treatment, stage in which symptomatology, interpretation and description by the patient are essential, as well as its recognition by the health staff for the timely definition of treatment. Objective: to describe the symptoms of angina in a group of men aged between 40 and 80 years with positive cardiac catheterization for coronary heart disease in the context of the theory of Elizabeth Lenz, in accordance with determinants, dimensions and consequences of symptoms. Materials and Methods: descriptive study with qualitative approach. Semi-structured interview was conducted to 27 men in relation to the characteristics of the symptoms experienced. The information was analyzed by content analysis technique. Results: relevant emerging categories within determinant factors: "I think I made an extra effort," "I do not control the food", "It is the inheritance", "so much stress". Dimensions: the most used words were: "pain", sometimes accompanied by "pressure" on the chest and "pain from ear to ear". Irradiation to the left arm and occasionally to the back. Accompanying symptoms: gastrointestinal, fatigue and tingling. Consequences: "I must change", "Nothing will change", "It will affect me." Conclusions: we obtained a characteristic profile that reflects the way to live the coronary heart disease facilitating understanding of the phenomenon and guiding the appropriate care.
