Periodontal diseases are infections that involve the dental support tissue that induce inflammation and can cause tooth loss if it is not controlled. Cardiovascular disease occurs due to heart and blood vessel disorders, it is the leading cause of death worldwide. Clinical periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases through systemic inflammation as an etiopathogenic link; due to metastatic infestation, they can reach different anatomical organs and cause pathological changes. The dental office is an appropriate place to take preventive measures for patients in both the oral and cardiovascular health fields. A current bibliographic search was carried out with the key words in PubMed, Cochrane, Google Scholar and SciELO, and this article reviews the literature on periodontitis, its relationship with cardiovascular diseases and the promotion of cardiovascular health.
