MARTINEZ, PEDRO e MATTAR, SALIM. Zoonotic bacteremia caused by Bergeyella zoohelcum in a newborn from Monteria. Infect. [online]. 2006, vol.10, n.2, pp.94-96. ISSN 0123-9392.
Bergeyella zoohelcum is a zoonotic pathogen mainly associated with dog or cat bites and, at present, it is the only representative of the genus Bergeyella. We report the isolation of Bergeyella zoohelcum from a newborn with bacteremia. Biochemical analysis indicated that this isolate was B. zoohelcum, a gramnegative bacillus that is rarely associated with infections in humans. The ability for dissemination and invasion of this opportunist pathogen is shown in this study and, also, the possibility of dog or cat bite wound infection is high and must be taken into consideration.
