GARCIA MARIN, Ignacio. The Parliamentarization of Impeachment in Latin America between 1990 and 2022. Desafíos [online]. 2023, vol.35, n.spe, e8. Epub 21-Mar-2024. ISSN 0124-4035. https://doi.org/10.12804/revistas.urosario.edu.co/desafios/a.13212.
This study analyzes the presidential interruptions that occurred in Latin America between 1990 and 2022. Studies conducted in the 1990s on the apparent inadequacy of presidentialism in the face of political crises were later challenged by research that emphasized the importance of partisan and contextual variables in understanding government crises. This article attempts to go further, describing the new wave of impeachment trials until 2022, posing possible causes of the early exits of presidents, and arguing that parliamentarization of impeachment may be taking place. I present a comparative and longitudinal descriptive analysis of the 155 presidents in Latin America (1990-2022), showing an evident weakness of the heads of state, a strengthening of the congresses, and a crucial role for party majorities.
