ROLDAN, Gabriel. Historical review of limnology in Colombia. Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2020, vol.44, n.171, pp.303-328.  Epub 04-Jun-2021. ISSN 0370-3908.  https://doi.org/10.18257/raccefyn.1056.

The study of limnology in Colombia begins with the works carried out by Joaquín Molano Campuzano in the 1950s. In the 1970s, a very productive stage began at the University of Antioquia that has continued growing exponentially until today. The book on the "Fundamentals of Neotropical Limnology" and the "Guide for the Study of Aquatic Macroinvertebrates in the Department of Antioquia" served as the basis for this rapid development of limnology in Colombia and in most of Latin American countries. Colombia is one of the richest countries in water worldwide: thousands of rivers, lakes, lagoons, marshes, and estuaries cover our entire territory. However, much remains to be known about these ecosystems. In the 1940s, a large number of reservoirs for energy generation and aqueducts began to be built, which generated a new field for limnological studies. The aquatic macroinvertebrates have been the best studied in Colombia and the guide for their identification and study in the Department of Antioquia has served as a reference for the establishment of similar keys in most Latin American countries. Our country counts the legislation issued by the Ministry of the Environment where the study of aquatic macroinvertebrates as quality bioindicators in environmental impact studies is established.
