Journalism has gone through a long way to become a profession. In this paper, the situation of journalists in Spain is analyzed in order to find if the journalistic activity has reached such status. There is high consensus among experts about the main characteristics to state that an occupation has become a profession. It is referred to a full-time occupation; it has an ethical code, official formation is necessary to perform it, an organization and an association has started, etc. The last objective is to determine if journalism meets these requirements and if consequently, it has reached the status of a profession in Spain.
