The article describes and analyzes the intervention of the Sociedad de Damas de la Beneficencia (Women's Charity Association) in order to address social problems in the National Territory of Misiones, Argentina during the period 1880-1930. This institution preceded social intervention by the State and played an important role in the development of assistance as a fundamental component of social policies. The results show the importance of the gender dimension in achieving the welfare of the population.
