In the interest of reviewing perinatal health statistics based on an analysis of mortality data, this article proposes an analytical approach transferred from the CDC in Atlanta an adapted by the researchers´ team at CEMIYA. This approach encompasses the health management phase, the conceptualization of epidemiological control, and the identification of stakeholders in the general social security and health system. It also uses descriptive epidemiological tools (rates and ratios) to achieve a quantitative definition of the problem. The approach discussed in this article proposes variables that can be easily collected from information available in mandatory vital records. It illustrates the basic and direct causes of death which allows defining specific actions aimed at resolving identified problems. The readers with an introduction to the use of the above mentioned tools by using available figures and data with regard to their institution or region.
