ROBLES, Leticia  e  PEREZ, Ana del Carmen. Expectations on filial obligation: Analysis of two Mexican generations. Rev.latinoam.cienc.soc.niñez juv [online]. 2012, vol.10, n.1, pp.527-540. ISSN 1692-715X.

Our study aimed to analyze youngster's and elderly people's perspectives on filial duties. Data came from two qualitative studies from Mexico, one with young people and the other with elders. Semi structured interviews and content analysis were carried out with the two groups. For both generational cohorts daughters are the ideal caregivers. Elderly people would prefer not having a son as a caregiver, a view not shared by young people. Old people stated that care providing is the responsibility of a daughter; on the contrary, for young people of both sexes such care giving is the responsibility of all children, regardless of their gender. These findings are analyzed in the context of household labour and women's participation in the labour force.

Palavras-chave : care giving; filial duties; expectations; youth; elderly.
