The large agronomic practices around water bodies represent a risk of contamination of them in terms of the entrance of agricultural products such as pesticides. The entry of pesticides to water bodies by itself is a problem not only for the impact on the ecosystem and public health but also for the products generated by its transformation into the environment which in some cases are more toxic than the parent product. As one of the most used pesticides in Colombian agriculture, Chlorpyrifos has been associated with contamination water sources. This study evaluated the leaching potential of Chlorpyrifos from the topsoil within the soil profile in a Colombian Entisol. The leaching of Chlorpyrifos was investigated during 84 days after application of 4.8 kg/ha of active ingredient in lysimeters with a plot area of 1 m2. Chlorpyrifos was detected in a maximum range of 10.0 to 9678.8 ug/kg in soil hitting the 56 cm of depth. So far, findings suggest that Chlorpyrifos can be mobilized to deeper horizons through preferential paths in spite of the high absorption coefficient of the parent compound. In this sense, the use of Chlorpyrifos should be more regulated.
