Abstract

GOMEZ-RESTREPO, Carlos et al. Factores asociados al intento de suicidio en la población colombiana. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2002, vol.31, n.4, pp.283-298. ISSN 0034-7450.

Objectives: To describe and analyze the epidemiological profile and the associated factors to suicide attempt in a sample of the Colombian Population. Design: Secondary analysis of the First National Mental Health and Psychoactive Drugs Consumption Survey database. Sample: 25.135 persons were interviewed. The sample was chosen to be between 16 to 60 years old with a total group of 21.988 persons for this analysis. ZUNG anxiety and depression scales were applied. Two hundred and forty independent variables were measured. Principal end measurement: Self-report of suicide attempt in the last year and lifetime prevalence. Results: Prevalence for suicide attempt in the last year and lifetime prevalence were 1.2% (95% CI: 1.06- 1.34) and 4.25% (95% CI: 4.25-4.81) respectively. When a multiple logistic regression model was conducted, the suicide attempt in the last year was associated with: ages from 16 to 21 years (OR=2.5;CI 95% 1.5-4.2), severe (OR 11.8; 5.1-27.3) moderate (OR = 5.3; 3.1-9.0) and mild depression (OR = 3.6 ; 2.4-5.8), moderate and severe levels of anxiety (OR = 3.4;1.8- 6.7), among other factors. Similar results were found for suicide attempt in the life span. Conclusions: Suicide attempt in Colombia has prevalence similar to other countries. The group with the highest risk is between ages 16 to 21, suffers depression, anxiety and seeks medical attention for nervousness. Some are verbally abused woman or have different moral values from those of their families.
