Abstract

FAJARDO CAIRASCO, David Alejandro et al. Behavior of mortality due to chronic kidney disease in the Valle del Cauca (Colombia), 2010-2020. Salud, Barranquilla [online]. 2025, vol.41, n.2, pp.436-453.  Epub Dec 01, 2025. ISSN 0120-5552.  https://doi.org/10.14482/sun.41.02.258.006.

Objective:

To describe the mortality due to chronic kidney disease in Valle del Cauca (Colombia), 2010-2020.

Introduction:

Chronic kidney disease, according to the World Health Organization, is defined as a progressive and degenerative pathology, associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality in the population, and is a high-cost disease. Globally, it is among the top ten causes of death.

Methodology:

A cross-sectional descriptive observational study was carried out to analyze mortality behavior due to chronic kidney disease in Valle del Cauca between 2010 and 2020, based on the death records of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE). The death rate and Years of Potentially Lost Life (YPLL) were calculated by age group and sex, using projections based on linear regressions.

Results:

The trend indicates an annual growth in the death rate between 0.17 and 0.23 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. Annually, the loss of years of life has been increasing by 0.83 years per 100,000 inhabitants in Valle del Cauca.

Conclusions:

Chronic kidney disease continues to be a public health problem, which has worsened over the years, presenting significant differences by sex and subregions of the department of Valle del Cauca.

Keywords : Mortality; renal insufficiency; chronic; comorbidity; death rate.
