Abstract
TORRES-HORTUA, Daniela Alejandra; PEREZ-RIVERO, Paula Fernanda and LEMOS-RAMIREZ, Nancy Viviana. Psychological interventions in adults with autism spectrum disorders: a scoping review. Medicas UIS [online]. 2026, vol.39, n.1, pp.5-25. Epub Jan 24, 2026. ISSN 0121-0319. https://doi.org/10.18273/revmed.v39n1-2026002.
Introduction:
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in communication and social interaction. Evidence in adults remains limited. In the United States, prevalence is 2.21%, while no clear figures exist for Colombia.
Objective:
To analyze psychological interventions reported in the scientific literature for adults with ASD and their main characteristics.
Materials and Methods:
A scoping review was conducted in PubMed, EBSCO Host, Scopus, Science Direct, and Google Scholar (June 2024). Clinical trials and randomized controlled trials were included, excluding medical/pharmacological treatments, irrelevant outcomes, and studies with methodological flaws. Results: twenty-seven articles were obtained. Cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness predominated. Techniques such as meditation, mindful breathing and psychoeducation were applied in group, in-person interventions.
Conclusions:
studies show benefits of psychological interventions; however, accessible and tailored protocols remain necessary.
Keywords : autism spectrum disorder; adult; psychotherapy; scoping review.
