Abstract

MONTANO VILLALBA, Ludivia Esther  and  RODRIGUEZ VILLAMIZAR, Laura Andrea. Knowledge on health rights and duties in medicine and nursing professionals, Bucaramanga, Colombia. Rev. Univ. Ind. Santander. Salud [online]. 2013, vol.45, n.1, pp.15-22. ISSN 0121-0807.

Objective: To describe the level of knowledge that medical and nursing professionals who work in public and private health institutions in the city of Bucaramanga (Santander-Colombia), have about health rights and duties established in the Constitution and the Social Security System in Health, 2010. Method: Descriptive, cross-sectional study. The institutions, services and professionals were selected at random. Five components of knowledge were studied, which included issues on health rights and duties listed in the Constitution, the Social Security System and the Colombian constitutional jurisprudence, as well as legal mechanisms to obtain the right to health in the country. Total and partial means were calculated as percentages. Results: The overall knowledge average was 57,7 %, the general knowledge in Constitution was 39,4 % and the mean of knowledge in the health system was 55,1 %. Best scores were found in professionals who were men, administrative specialists, physicians, and people with more work experience and in the private sector. Graduates less than five years obtained a lower mean score. Conclusions: The knowledge's levels on rights and duties related to health were deficient in the health professionals in Bucaramanga. In spite of the importance of this subject in the health professional's performance, is evident from these results an scarce of formation and continued education process in the subject of health rights.
