Abstract

SANTOS FARAH, Marta Ferreira. Education and Public Policy in Brazil. From the Pioneering Initiatives of the 60's to the Institutionalization of the "Public Field". Estud. Polit. [online]. 2016, n.49, pp.192-215. ISSN 0121-5167.  https://doi.org/10.17533/udea.espo.n49a11.

This article analyses the education in public policy in Brazil, beginning with the account of the first initiatives in Public Administration and Political Science and, then, addressing the discussion of a recent movement that seeks to establish a new academic field on the subject. The article is based on the literature review of public policy in Brazil and the institutionalization of Public Administration and Political Science as disciplines; it also take in account the analysis of the presence of the study of public policies in the curriculum of the programs in different areas. The investigation shows that the first initiatives for the institutionalization of public policy as a discipline did not include the establishment of independent courses in the curricula, but had a focus on research. However, the expansion of programs that include public policy in their curricula since the last decade brought changes to this scenario. Moreover, the role of an active community has been crucial for the institutionalization of a new multidisciplinary field, named by the participants the "public field." This process is now redefining the institutionalization of public policy in Brazil, which brings education to the fore.
