Resiliencie and emotional regulation in childhood bereavement. Psicogente [online]. 2024, vol.27, n.52, pp.44-65.  Epub Sep 01, 2024. ISSN 0124-0137.  https://doi.org/10.17081/psico.27.52.6442.

The loss of a family member in childhood produces various reactions that in some cases do not imply the development of pathologies, due to internal psychological resources. This study aims to determine the relationship between resilience and emotional regulation of children who have experienced the loss of a family member. The research approach was quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional and correlational in scope. The School Resilience Scale, the Emotional Regulation Questionnaire for children and adolescents, and the Resilience Scale were used. The sample was non-probability purposive, consisting of 50 caregivers and 50 children aged 9 to 11 years who lost a family member between 2019 and 2022. The results reveal that children’s resilience and emotional regulation are not associated, however, there is a direct association between caregivers’ and children’s levels of expressive suppression; furthermore, girls use expressive suppression and cognitive reappraisal strategies more frequently than boys. In conclusion, there is no relationship between children’s levels of resilience and emotional regulation, only regulatory strategies are associated with those of their caregivers; furthermore, there are differences in the use of strategies according to children’s gender. There is a need to study parenting styles and emotional regulation strategies in bereaved children, and to implement plans for better use of emotional regulation in caregivers.
