Abstract

GUARIN GIRALDO, Germán W.  and  POVEDA, Germán. VARIABILIDAD ESPACIAL Y TEMPORAL DEL ALMACENAMIENTO DE AGUA EN EL SUELO EN COLOMBIA. Rev. acad. colomb. cienc. exact. fis. nat. [online]. 2013, vol.37, n.142, pp.89-113. ISSN 0370-3908.

The conjoint space-time dynamics of monthly soil water content and precipitation is studied, and their association with El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is quantified for Colombia during the period spanning from August 2002 to February 2008. For estimation purposes, soil and groundwater data consists of equivalent water thickness (EWH) obtained from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), as well as soil moisture depth from the NCEP/NCAR Climate Reanalysis Project, and rainfall data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). Analyses are performed for the five major hydro-climatic and ecological regions of Colombia, namely Caribbean, Pacific, Andean, Orinoco and Amazonia. Results evidence an inverse relationship between EWH and the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI), one of the indices used to characterizing the ENSO system. Simultaneous correlation coefficients between EWH from the GRACE Mission and soil moisture data from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis are greater than 0.6 for all the Colombian regions, whereas 1 and 2 monthslagged correlation coefficients between precipitation and EWH and soil moisture evidence the delayed temporal response of groundwater and soil moisture with respect to rainfall in Colombia.
