Abstract

ACEVEDO TARAZONA, Álvaro  and  VILLAMIZAR, Carlos Iván. Marriages and Socioeconomic Alliances between German Migrants and the Elite of Bucaramanga (1857-1886). Soc. Econ. [online]. 2024, n.53, e10213255.  Epub Oct 24, 2024. ISSN 1657-6357.  https://doi.org/10.25100/sye.v0i53.13255.

The article analyzes how the German community established in Bucaramanga during the second half of the 19th century used marriage as a means to forge socioeconomic ties with local elites and secure commercial and political interests. This process was mediated by dispensations for disparity of worship, given the Protestant affiliations of the Germans residing in Bucaramanga. The study draws on parish and official sources, particularly from the Fondo Reclamaciones of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and applies the prosopographical method to infer patterns from the data and construct a historical representation from a microhistorical perspective. Marriage functioned as a mechanism for fostering cohesion among social groups in which political and economic interests prevailed, both on the part of the Germans and the local families who sought to ally with foreigners to strengthen their business ventures.
