This article presents the history of the concept of “university social responsibility (USR)”, as a result of a methodological requirement in the research process of a doctoral dissertation. Through the review of literature that address the topic, it is intended to reach the approach to various theoretical references in the historical development of the concept of "responsibility" that allow to know and understand some of the ways in which, since modernity, it has been adjectivized in and from various scenarios and disciplinary areas, to finally permeate the reflections and dynamics of higher education to become, at present, from an ethical criterion, a central theme in the agendas of universities under the name of “university social responsibility”.
