The labor aspirations of young university students face labor markets characterized by their instability and the growing lack of available employment and social security. Hence the relevance of studying the job expectations of students in the university environment, given the panorama of youth employment and the precarious conditions that the market offers to future professionals. The study was cross-sectional, with a survey technique, 1147 students from 8 universities from urban, rural and border regions of northern Mexico participated. Job expectations were analyzed in 4 dimensions: Work environment and availability of free time, recognition and freedom to act, stability and career line, remuneration and benefits. A third of students perceive their future employment with uncertainty. Their work expectations and the meaning they give to a job remain priorities: that their opinion be considered, they express their interest in schedules that favor the reconciliation of their personal and professional life. Job stability is not necessarily contemplated, they are willing to seek new opportunities if the work environment does not satisfy them. This generation shows greater agreement with the substantive meaning of work, remaining in the constant search for challenges, with special emphasis on selfrealization, autonomy and personal satisfaction. Young people from rural areas travel with higher expectations of a future job when migrating to urban areas. Young people from border areas, given the precariousness of the labor dynamics in their regions, express lower expectations.
