Can quality be considered a strategic conduct that improves the competitiveness of companies within the markets of their interest, according to the Theory of Industrial Organization? In order to answer this question, a systematic review was made of publications in research indexing databases, in English, Spanish, and other languages, with dates ranging from the beginning of the 20th century to the end of the second decade of the 21st century. It was possible to establish a theoretical-conceptual approach that combines analytical theoretical structures typical of microeconomics and industrial engineering, as a contribution and complement to current research, and shows new strategies of competitiveness and fields of research/application for business and regional development.
