Abstract

DEL RIO PARRA, ELENA. Medical Bibliography and Sensationalism. The Discursos Medicinales of Juan Mendez Nieto. Front. hist. [online]. 2015, vol.20, n.1, pp.150-172. ISSN 2027-4688.

This article analyzes Juan Méndez Nieto's (ca. 1531-1616) Discursos Medicinales as inconsistent within the 16th century medical bibliography. Its rhetoric and topics link it to quackery, rather than to a therapeutic or speculative scientific treaty. The Discursos fit better within genres such as pseudo-autobiography and sensationalist pamphlets, rather than with those on American remedies.

Keywords : 16th century; Cartagena; medicine; Méndez Nieto; quackery; Santo Domingo.
