CAMPOS, Sérgio. Women's Participation in the 1958 Presidential Elections in Portugal. Hist.mem. [online]. 2024, n.spe1, pp.125-156. Epub Jan 28, 2025. ISSN 2027-5137. https://doi.org/10.19053/uptc.20275137.nespecial.2024.16308.
This document describes the participation of Portuguese women in the 1958 presidential elections in Portugal. It identifies women's support committees for opposition candidates and analyses the extent of women's participation, as well as the involvement of certain print publications in the electoral process. The topic falls within social and political history, aiming to understand the political involvement of Portuguese women in the presidential elections of June 8, 1958, against the backdrop of the First and Second Republics. The study begins with a bibliographic review, drawing from sources such as Diario de Lisboa, Novidades, República, Distrito de Portoalegre, and Rabeca.
This study reveals that women's participation in these elections was quite limited, influenced by factors associated with the indoctrination under the Estado Novo regime. Regarding the role played by the national press, República was the newspaper most involved in the electoral process, extensively publishing news and opinion articles favouring opposition to the Estado Novo.
