Abstract

AREVALO PEREZ, Emily Yuliana; PEDRAZA VARGAS, Steve Fernando  and  GUZMAN JIMENEZ, Yuliana. The Snoezelen rooms from the experience of people involved in pediatric neurorehabilitation processes: Ethnomethodological study. Rev Col Med Fis Rehab [online]. 2024, vol.34, n.2, 438.  Epub July 18, 2024. ISSN 0121-0041.  https://doi.org/10.28957/rcmfr.438.

Introduction.

Snoezelen rooms (SR) are a tool used in neurorehabilitation to intervene in cognitive symptomatology. These rooms use a multisensory technological method to provide the patient with sensory experiences through different elements located in a given space.

Objective.

To understand the use of SR from the experience of the health professionals, family members and/or caregivers and patients who participate in multisensory neurorehabilitation processes carried out in these spaces in Colombia.

Methods.

A qualitative, ethnomethodological and dialectical study was conducted through a contextual design of two moments and three scenarios. The population was selected at convenience and included eight health professionals, eight family members and/or caregivers, and eight neuropediatric patients. The information was collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews (eight interviews), a conversation script (a focus group) and observations in context (eight observations).

Results.

Four emerging categories were obtained: elements of the SR, pediatric neurorehabilitation, rehabilitation professional, and comprehensive intervention.

Conclusions.

The SRs have an impact on patients due to the elements that are arranged in the context and the way in which the interaction with them is promoted; apparently, the organization of the elements in the space mobilizes contextual referents.
