Abstract
LOUREIRO SILVEIRA, Suzana Maria. Urbanization in Colonial America and Iberian Colonization Processes: An Analysis through the Lens of Latin American Social Thought. Rev. Ciudades Estados Política [online]. 2024, vol.11, n.3, pp.15-37. Epub Dec 31, 2024. ISSN 2462-9103. https://doi.org/10.15446/rcep.v11n3.115384.
The article analyzes urbanization in colonial America through the lens of the Portuguese and Spanish conquest and colonization projects, considering the historical context and socio-territorial structuring shaped by the reproduction of social relations and abstractions rooted in the principle of private property. The production of urban space is framed within the primitive phase of Latin American capitalism, driven by expansionist movements toward the periphery of the world and the resulting urban explosion, marked by the intensification and concentration of populations in cities. Given the importance of understanding the urban development of Latin America through Iberian colonization processes, the study undertakes a comparative analysis of urban consolidation in both Spanish and Portuguese America as an instrument of power. Methodologically, this is an interdisciplinary study that, to grasp its object of analysis and achieve its research objectives, presents a critical review of selected literature based on the theoretical frameworks of the Theory of Latin American Social Thought.
Keywords : colonial America; urbanization; colonization processes; capitalism.
