Abstract

GIRALDO CARDENAS, KARYN ALEXANDRA  and  GARCIA ESCOBAR, JORGE ORLANDO. EXPERIMENTAL DETERMINATION OF THE APTITUDE TO THE THERMAL CLAY EXPANSION. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2006, vol.73, n.149, pp.69-80. ISSN 0012-7353.

The main goal of this job was to study, at laboratory level, the ability of several clays to expand at high temperatures up to become lightweight aggregates. The study was carried out varying burning temperature and clay composition (clays and clays plus expansion promoter agents, such as Calcium Carbonate and coal fly ashes). The experimental procedure included four stages: preparation, characterization, preliminary burning tests and specific burning tests; it was used the percentage volume change of each sample as a thermal expansion comparison parameter and density, open porosity and water absorption of the obtained products were used as quality parameters. It was found that one of the studied clays showed ability to expand in a natural way and there were other five modified clays (clays mixed with different proportions of additives) that also expanded at temperatures between 1100°C and 1250°C.

Keywords : Thermal Expansion; burning; Light Weight Aggregates; LECA.
