Abstract

CONCHA DEMOYA, ALEXANDER; QUIROGA CRUZ, HUGO  and  BENJUMEA HERNANDEZ, PEDRO NEL. MODELLING OF THE POLLUTANT FRONTS GENERATED BY PIPELINE FUEL TRANSPORTATION. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2007, vol.74, n.152, pp.89-96. ISSN 0012-7353.

A mathematical model for predicting the growth of the blending zone or pollutant front, developed between petroleum derived fuels as a consequence of their sequential transport into product pipelines, is proposed. This model is constructed from transport phenomena basic concepts by introducing a mass transfer effective coefficient taking into account the pure diffusion mechanism and its contribution to convection. The model, once adjusted using field data, is applied for predicting the pollutant front volume and for analyzing the effect of variables such as the product pipeline length and diameter, and the flow rate on the growth of the front volume.

Keywords : pipeline; petroleum products; transport; mass transfer.
