Abstract

LUNA, GABRIELA; VILLADA, HÉCTOR  and  VELASCO, REINALDO. FIQUE´S FIBER REINFORCED THERMOPLASTIC STARCH OF CASSAVA: PRELIMINARY. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2009, vol.76, n.159, pp.145-151.. ISSN 0012-7353.

Short fibers of fique (Furcraea spp) were employed as material of reinforcement for a plasticized cassava (Manihot sculenta crantz) native starch matrix. It was used a factorial experimental design to evaluate the mechanical properties: Tensile strength and elongation in three blends of starch with fique fiber contents of 10, 15, 20% and TPS without fiber as blanc. The tensile strength was greater for the composed one with 10% of fiber, while with 15 and 20% diminished. The elongation also diminished with the increment of the content of fiber. The Data obtained by DSC revealed lower transition temperatures for the mixtures than for the pure thermoplastic matrix. MOAR revealed that 15 and 20% content of fiber interfere in the disruption of the granule of starch.

Keywords : Fique fiber; composite material; thermoplastic starch (TPS); mechanical properties of biocomposites.
