Abstract

SERJE-MARTINEZ, David Alfonso  and  PACHECO-BOLIVAR, Jovanny Alejandro. Parallel kinematics machine tools: Research, development and future trends. Dyna rev.fac.nac.minas [online]. 2017, vol.84, n.201, pp.17-26. ISSN 0012-7353.  https://doi.org/10.15446/dyna.v84n201.59572.

Since its introduction in the middle 90s, parallel kinematics machine tools (PKMT) created high expectations through their possible roles in industry. More than twenty years have gone since then (1994), and even though these kinematic structures have provided excellent performance regarding dynamic capacity, stability, precision, and rigidity, its impact on the market hasn´t been the expected one. What could have gone wrong? ¿More research is required? ¿Is it a market concern?. This article, explores these questions, based on the beginnings of parallel kinematics, its strengths and weaknesses, it analyzes its current situation and forecasts future developments, making a particular focus on three axis milling machines.

Keywords : Parallel kinematics; Milling machine; CNC; Machine tools; Dynamics; Performance.
