Abstract

AREVALO, Daniel; MARTINE, Carlos A; RINCON, Javier  and  GUERRERO, Mario F. Alkaloid fraction obtained from Valeriana pavonii Poepp with anticonvulsant activity. Rev. colomb. cienc. quim. farm. [online]. 2006, vol.35, n.2, pp.168-176. ISSN 0034-7418.

The ethanolic extract and an alkaloid fraction obtained from Valerian pavonii showed anticonvulsant effects in maximal electroshock seizures in mice (40 and 70% protection respectively). The alkaloid fraction contains aromatic, and terpenoid functional groups. Flavonoid and steroid/terpenoid compounds are present in V. pavonii too. The chemical composition of this specie differs from V. officinalis although they both have the same ethnobotanical uses. The anticonvulsant activity of the alkaloid fraction from V. pavonii supports its ethnobotanical use and encourages finding new therapeutic alternatives for treatment of neurological disorders.

Keywords : Valerian pavonii; alkaloid; anticonvulsant; maximal electroshock seizure.
