Resumen

MATOS, Natália Oliveira et al. Evaluation of the non-stick effect of Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus citriodora oils essentials against Staphylococcus aureus strain. Rev. colomb. cienc. quim. farm. [online]. 2022, vol.51, n.2, pp.871-880.  Epub 20-Dic-2023. ISSN 0034-7418.  https://doi.org/10.15446/rcciquifa.v51n2.98452.

Introduction:

Dental biofilm is a complex structure formed from the adhesion of various microbial cells to the film acquired on the dental structure. These cells adhere to each other while synthesizing an extracellular matrix, becoming a highly organized community, which makes it difficult to remove and promotes resistance to antimicrobials. The presence of Staphylococcus aureus in the oral biofilm can cause an disturb in the microbiota, facilitating the beginning of a disease process.

Aim:

To evaluate the non-adherent ability of Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus citriodora against Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Results:

It was possible to observe that the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus inhibited the formation of the biofilm with a Minimum Adhesive Inhibitory Concentration (MAIC) similar to 0.12 % chlorhexidine digluconate, both of 1:8. The essential oil of Eucalyptus citriodora did not prevent bacterial adherence to the tube walls in any evaluated concentration.

Conclusion:

Only the essential oil of the species Eucalyptus globulus has non-adherent activity against Staphylococcus aureus and can be used as an alternative product to control the biofilm.

Palabras clave : Dental biofilm; essential oils; phytotherapy.
