Abstract

OSORIO O, José Henry. Carbohydrate metabolism during pregnancy. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2003, vol.54, n.2, pp.97-106. ISSN 0034-7434.

The production and regulation of glucose, as well as the net balance between systemic requirements, decide the necessary metabolic pathways for energy production. During normal pregnancy, the glucose and metabolic fuels are provided in a well-regulated manner. Diabetes in pregnancy is one of the principal causes of changes in maternal metabolism that affects fetal development and alters neonatal gluco-regulation. The present review is focused on carbohydrate metabolism, and the description of the main processes for energy production and its use during the gestational period.

Keywords : pregnancy; metabolism; carbohydrates.
