ACOSTA OSIO; ACOSTA OSIO, J.J  and  VIVAS. Levels of serum calcium in patients with spontaneous abortion. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2004, vol.55, n.1, pp.24-28. ISSN 0034-7434.

Objective: the purpose of this study was to determine the levels of serum calcium in the women that presented spontaneous abortion, residents in the Atlantic department to determine if the serum calcium levels are associated to pregnancy loss. Study design: we performed a case-control study evaluating the levels of calcium in a cohort of patients that presented with spontaneous abortion at the Obstetrics and Gynecology service of the Metropolitan University Hospital of Barranquilla, Colombia. 82 patients were enrolled in the study. Results: the highest incidence of spontaneous abortion was incomplete type, higher in multiparous women, and with gestational age between 8 and 12 weeks, the hypocalcemia occurred in 52,3% of the patients distributed in this way: the patients' 42,6% that didn't have previous abortion, 7,3% that had previous abortion, 2,4% had 3 or more previous abortions. 43,9% of the patients had the normal serum calcium. Patients with low calcium had a relative risk of 1,8 (p<0,001) compared to those with normal calcium. Conclusion: the serum calcium could be a good parameter to predict the loss of pregnancy.
