Abstract

FORERO, Juan Carlos  and  RODRIGUEZ, Jorge Augusto. Indications, technique and management of open abdominal surgery in obstetrics and gynaecology. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2005, vol.56, n.2, pp.155-165. ISSN 0034-7434.

Intentional open abdominal management of severe pathologies is becoming increasingly common in obstetrics when dealing with our patients. The benefits include preventing and treating intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH), intra-abdominal infection and abdominal compartment syndrome (ACS) accompanying a frequent and catastrophic illness such as severe preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. This review covers infection mechanisms, physiopathological consequences of ACS and traditional and new abdominal techniques for open abdominal surgery leading to their suitable treatment.

Keywords : abdomen, compartment syndrome; intra-abdominal hypertension; suture techniques.
