Objective: a retrospective study analysed results and prognostic factors regarding patients suffering from stage IIB-IIIB cervical carcinoma treated with cisplatin-based chemotherapy concurrently with standard radiotherapy. Material and methods: 164 patients were admitted to the hospital from September 1999 to December 2002 who had been diagnosed with cervical cancer; 83 patients suffering from stage IIB-IIIB were selected. Treatment consisted of radiotherapy plus weekly cisplatin-based chemotherapy lasting five weeks. Results: 89.15% of the patients received 5 cycles of chemotherapy. Median overall survival rate was 41 months, with 68.8% 3-year overall survival, 66.3% disease-free survival and 83.1% loco-regional disease-free survival rates. Prognostic factors for survival were: stage IIIB, ≥ 7 cm clinical tumour diameter, patients who had not undergone brachytherapy and biparametrial disease Conclusions: a radiation treatment and concurrent weekly cisplatin therapy regimen in patients suffering from stage IIB-IIIB cervical carcinoma proved feasible in the Carlos Van Buren Hospital (Chilean public health system) having good tolerance, results and prognostic factors similar to those reported in the international literature.
