Abstract

SEPULVEDA-AGUDELO, Janer. The twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence: a review of the literature. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2008, vol.59, n.2, pp.140-146. ISSN 0034-7434.

Objective: a review was made of  literature regarding twin reversed arterial perfusion (TRAP) sequence pathophysiology, classification, diagnosis and treatment. Method: a search of the Medline and Ovid databases was made and also of the literature Publisher in English from 1981 to2007,emphasising the diagnosis and treatment of this condition using summaries for analysis. Results: prenatal diagnosis was made by basic ultrasound from 11 weeks of gestation; Doppler and echocardiography examinations were complementary and were more useful for followup. Multiple treatments have been proposed ranging from expectant management, non-invasive methods to invasive methods. Conclusions: diagnosis and early treatment leads to greater chances of survival for the healthy twin foetus; the choice of treatment depends on a particular doctor’s knowledge and experience.

Keywords : acardian foetus; acardian twin and twin reversed arterial perfusion sequence; prenatal diagnosis; umbilical cord ligation.
