FONSECA-BECERRA, Carlos Eduardo  e  BAYONA-OSPINA, Miguel Andrés. Dengue during pregnancy and in the newborn: a report of two cases in Neiva, Huila, Colombia and literature review. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2010, vol.61, n.1, pp.73-78. ISSN 0034-7434.

Introduction: dengue is a viral infection that affects Colombia, especially children in the Huila department. It continues spreading throughout Latin-American countries, warnings having been issued by several health agencies. Objective: presenting the first cases to be documented in Huila in pregnant women and their newborn. Methodology: this article presents two clinical cases and a review of the pertinent literature regarding dengue during pregnancy, in the newborn and during the perinatal period. Results: most studies were, in fact, found to be case reports. The 2009 WHO guidelines for dengue and two systematic reviews of the subject were consulted. The presentation of dengue during pregnancy, in the newborn and associated problems is described. Conclusion: the new nomenclature for dengue should be stressed: dengue with or without warning signs and severe dengue. There is a clear need for comparative studies aimed at defining specific guidelines for expectant mothers suffering from dengue.
