Abstract
GONGORA-RODRIGUEZ, Alfredo and FONTANILLA-RAMIREZ, Diana. The influence of sperm DNA fragmentation on assisted reproduction techniques and embryo quality. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2010, vol.61, n.2, pp.160-164. ISSN 0034-7434.
Objective: presenting a review of the literature about sperm DNA fragmentation, its impact on assisted reproduction techniques and embryo quality. Methodology: the MEDLINE/PubMed database was searched; the search terms used were: sperm fragmentation, semen parameters, assisted reproduction techniques and embryo quality. Articles published from 1999 to 2010 were reviewed. Results: sperm fragmentation studies provided complementary information about a patient’s sperm quality, this being a parallel test to semen analysis. Such tests’ diagnoses represent the starting point for taking decisions about the reproduction technique to be used. Conclusion: the sperm ADN fragmentation index represents a valuable tool for ascertaining a patients fertilising ability.
Keywords : DNA fragmentation; male infertility; embryo quality; assisted reproduction techniques (ART).
