Abstract

Objective: ascertaining the prevalence of depressive disorder in two population groups of adolescent females, defining their epidemiological profile and association with pregnancy. Methodology: this was a descriptive cross-sectional study which included 125 pregnant adolescents who were being attended at the Luz Castro de Gutiérrez hospitalduring2009,and125non-pregnantadolescents attending the Jorge Eliécer Gaitán school in the city of Medellín in Colombia. The participants all filled in the Zung questionnaire for diagnosing depression. Results: the prevalence of depression in pregnant adolescents was 32.8% and 16.8% in the group of non-pregnant students. Risk factors were described in both groups. Conclusions: depression was a frequently occurring health problem in the group of pregnant adolescent females attending the Luz Castro de Gutiérrez hospital in Medellin, Colombia.
