Resumen

CONGOTE-ARANGO, Lina María et al. Adolescence as a risk factor for maternal and perinatal complications in Cali, Colombia, 2002-2007: a cross-sectional study. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2012, vol.63, n.2, pp.119-126. ISSN 0034-7434.

Objective: Evaluating adolescence as a risk factor for maternal and perinatal complications in Cali, Colombia, 2002-2007. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out on 29,158 pregnant women aged 34 or less who were seen by the Cali public health network from 2002-2007. The network has three healthcare levels; the whole of the third-level database and a representative sample from the first and second levels were included. Maternal outcomes such as hypertensive disorders, metabolic alterations, hemorrhages, infections and conditions when giving birth were evaluated; perinatal outcomes covered infection, hyaline membrane disease, low birth-weight, intrauterine growth restriction, intrauterine death and nutritional alterations. The analysis included an exploration of the variables and calculation of the odds ratios and their confidence intervals (95%) comparing adolescent mothers and adults in terms of perinatal and maternal outcomes with variables of interest. Results: Adolescence was found to be a risk factor for developing eclampsia (2.087 OR: 1.481-2.940 95% CI) regarding mother aged older than 20 and was a risk factor for intrauterine growth restriction (1.23 OR: 1.077-1.405 95% CI). By contrast, being an adolescent was a protection-inducing factor against developing preeclampsia (0.875 OR: 0.0810–0.946 95% CI) and intrauterine death (0.843 OR: 0.722-0.992 95% CI). Conclusions: Pregnancy occurring during adoles cence increases the risk of eclampsia and intrauter ine growth restriction, but not for other maternal or perinatal morbidities.
