Abstract

SEPULVEDA-CARRILLO, Gloria Judith  and  GOLDENBERG, Paulete. Knowledge and Practices of young people related to Human Papillomavirus Infection: New updated. Rev Colomb Obstet Ginecol [online]. 2014, vol.65, n.2, pp.152-161. ISSN 0034-7434.  https://doi.org/10.18597/rcog.63.

Introduction: Because of the size of the problem and the implications for triggering several forms of cancer such as cervical cancer, the human papilloma virus (HPV) is considered a public health issue. Objective: The purpose of the study was to conduct a systematic review of the literature on sexuality, knowledge, preventive practices and vulnerability in relation to HPV infections among adolescents and young adults. Materials and methods: Bibliographic searches in journals and/or scientific periodicals with serialized publications indexed in the Bireme, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink and Scopus databases, during the period between 1995 and 2012. Results: In total, 60 articles were selected, including 36 reviews, 17 cross-sectional studies, 2 cohort studies, 2 case-controls studies, 1 clinical trial, 1 qualitative study, and 1 case series. A significant proportion of the youths showed a limited perception not only of the forms of transmission but also of the consequences of the infection, and gender differences were noteworthy. As they fail to identify the personal risk of catching the infection, youths forgo the use of protection such as practicing safe sex in cases of stable or non-stable relationships, as well as in heterosexual and homosexual forms of intercourse. Conclusions: The study showed evidence of the need to implement specific interventions for HVP focused on the youth, under the conceptual perspective of vulnerability.

Keywords : Papillomavirus infections; sexuality; knowledge; health vulnerability; young adult.
