Objective: As a result of the perception of evaluation issues in the medical school programme at Quindío University, supported by the self- evaluation process and by the opinions of faculty and students alike, a study was proposed with the objective of "developing, together with the participation of the faculty of the medical programme basic area, an evaluation proposal built from a competency-based curriculum". Materials and methods: Qualitative design of Participatory Action Research type. Analysis Unit: learning evaluation in the basic area of the Medical School Programme at Quindío University. Working group: eleven professors of the basic area. Procedure: discussion focus groups, research workshops, analysis and reflection spiral, problem identification, development of the evaluation proposal. Analysis: categorization, open and axial coding, triangulation, interpretation and comparison between the findings and the theory, information feedback. Results: A problem of evaluation planning was identified, triggering a process of analysis and ref lection that resulted in the formulation of competencies and their respective evaluation criteria. A conceptual and operational evolution of the evaluation was observed, from verification to innovation, by means of alternatives mediated by attitudinal changes among the faculty. Conclusions: Professors in the basic area, from a verification approach to evaluation, show by means of participatory action research an evolution towards innovation of the evaluation proposal with an educational intent.
