Body image perception and its experience was explored as a phenomenological central entity in a group of 38 women with eating disorders who were treated by the authors in Santa Fe de Bogotá (Colombia). This outpatient treatment incorporates psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. The role ofbody image was conceptualized from a cognitive-affective, biológical, psychosocial and psychosexual perspective. Body image insatisfaction and/or distortion were sistematically explored . A comparison with the currentliterature wasrealized. It was foundthatthe degree of body image insatisfaction and/or distortion is the central psychopathological problem and an important factor in the prognosis. The latter is also influentiated by the existence of comorbidity and the presence ofear/ytraumaticexperiences. Finally, theneedforan integral approach for a prolonged is discussed.
