Abstract

ALARCON, RENATO D. PSYCHIATRY IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM ATAVISMS, REALITIES AND CHALLENGES. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2000, vol.29, n.1, pp.9-28. ISSN 0034-7450.

In spite of changes in paradigms, psychiatry in the third millennium will keep its ties to traditional atavisms along its history: a preaching, hammering attitude vis-á-vis sceptical glances; weightiness of personalities in its own development; elitistic condition of its practice; dogmatic positions; reductionistic explanations; the stigma of mental illness and its dependence on other disciplines. Hybrid reality of current psychiatry is posed, while its characteristic universality tendency of the last 25 years is f oreseen. It will prolong both hy bridation and atavisms durin this millennium. Current predominance of neurobiolopgy in american psychiatry and its fu ture role in other countries, especially third world, is discussed. The author anticipates a sort of centrifugal evolution toward «several psychiaties».
