The present study describes the prevalence of depressive disorder in medical students in the área of basic sciences of the Universidad del Valle, by means of the Zung test for depression, in the first semester of 1998. Furthermore, it determines associations of this psychopathology with epidemiological variables such as age, gender, socioeconomic stratum and academic year. A prevalence of 36.4% for depressive disorder, 21.9% for mild depression, 10.6% for modérate depression and 3.5% for severe depression were found. Data exceeds those of the National Study of Mental Health and Substances Intake of 1997, for the general population. Inverse association in lower socioeconomic stratum and in feminine sex (p<0.05) was similar to the national study. Association between depression and lower academic year (p<0.05).
