URIBE, CARLOS AI.BERTO. CULTURAL CONTROVERSY IN DSM-IV. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2000, vol.29, n.4, pp.345-366. ISSN 0034-7450.

The purpose of this article is to examine DSM-IV's explicit claim to be a universal nosological classification of mental disorders. This claim includes two propositions: one concerning its empirical, transcultural applicability, and the other about the existence of so-called Culture-Bound Syndromes. Both are here discussed, as well as the arguments that cultural considerations included in DSM-IV have elicited. The article considers the category of schizophrenia and other psycotic disorders, looks into what is stated as the main topic in this question: the debate on the nature of mental disorders. As a conclusión, the author thinks that the debate amongst biomedical and cultural and social constructivist views of mental disorders is far from being solved.
