Abstract
TORRES GUTIERREZ, MANUEL. MIGUEL JIMÉNEZ LÓPEZ A VICTORIAN PSYCHIATRIST IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. rev.colomb.psiquiatr. [online]. 2001, vol.30, n.2, pp.113-140. ISSN 0034-7450.
Doctor Jiménez López was the first teacher of Psychopathology in Colombia. He had been trained as a psychiatrist in France between 1908 and 1910, from where he brought Morel’s theory about brain degeneration and moral laxitude as causes of mental illness. He believed he had found a supposed degeneration of our race, which he considered the ethiological source of our psychic pathology, and of many of our national features. A good part of his intellectual efforts were addressed towards a new educative reform, adopting modern american and european pedagogical methods and integrating recent contributions of developmental psychology.
