Abstract

FRANCO ZULUAGA, ALVARO. ETHICS AND SUICIDAL BEHAVIORS. Rev. colomb. psiquiatria [online]. 2001, vol.30, n.4, pp.369-382. ISSN 0034-7450.

From a bioethical perpective, this paper reviews conflicts faced by psychiatrists and other physicians with suicidal patients in the emergency room. Four ethical theories are presented: utilitarism or searching the best consepuences; kantism, focused on priciples rather than in consequences; liberal individualism, with human rights protecting life, freedom, expression and property: and principialism or common moral based on principles. It also studies suicidal behaviors through bioethical priciples (autonomy, harmless, beneficial and fair approaches) and poses a treatment model for this type of behaviors.
