Abstract

[online]. 2003, vol.32, n.1, pp.11-26. ISSN 0034-7450.

Abstract Bipolar Disorder with atypical features in adolescents and the limitations of the categorical classifications ,are a challenge for an early diagnosis and treatment. Additionally, studies exploring this co morbidity in Eating Disorder patients are limited and inconsistent. This study explores the Bipolar Disorder prevalence in a woman population with Anorexia nervosa, Bulimia nervosa and EDNOS and Multi-Impulsivity. Objectives 1. Establish the BD prevalence in an 181 women sample with Eating Disorder and compare the findings with other epidemiological studies. 2. Describe and analyze the proposed variables in an association model to analyze their impact in BD risk. Design Transversal study and prove of an association model with Logistic Regression. Results In this sample, 14 patients with BD II or III (7.73%) were founded. 86% (12) have been presenting mixed episodes with rapid and ultra- rapid cycles. The proposed association model suggest that patients with multi-impulsivity behaviors like auto-mutilations, suicide attempts, kleptomania, trycotilomania, substance abuse coexisting with eating behavior like binges or purges, with transition symptoms history, under 23 years of age, and with bipolar disorder relatives , have an odds ratio 38 times greater for BD than the odds of a subject without this risk variables (OR= 37.45 , IC 95% 5-282).

Keywords : Eating Disorders; Bipolar Disorder; Multi-Impulsivity; Co morbidity.
