The article begins with a description of the characteristics of the old health system in Colombia, outlining its weaknesses, which forced a restructuration, generating the new General Health System of Social Security (Sistema General de Seguridad Social en Salud - SGSSS). Even though the new System has a solid philosophical foundation, it has caused difficulties. Nonetheless, aside from situations which are hard to manage; the new System has also brought forth new opportunities for professional development in mental health, different form the traditional assistance area.
